Where Great Intelligence Goes To Be Insulted

Faster Than The Speed Of Blight

There was a young woman named Bright

Whose speed was much faster than light.

She set out one day

In a relative way,

And returned on the previous night.

Another intellectual symposium degenerates into a shrieking food fight between gibbons.

I know enough about this crap to be dangerous. I am not a Nobel Laureate, or a gifted mathematician. I can do advanced math but it takes so much effort that I've set my head on fire when that dry rotten wood over-heats!

I know chit gets weird when we approach relativistic velocities. It gets absolutely GAY when we delve into the subatomic realm of rogue particles like gluons, muons, antiprotons and morons. I can even follow the math partway down those rabbit holes too. Perhaps the primates that hang out at the Treehouse are higher order primates than I am - I can live with that.

Professor Filthie concludes that while bears
undoubtedly shit in the woods...the
Pope is not necessarily a Catholic.

But - hell's bells - I know flubdubbery and turd polishing when I see it too. One of my scientific adversaries told me that light bends around a gravity well because it's merely following the curvature of space around that gravity well. I was gonna cut him a new one by pointing out that if the light was merely following the curvature of space - it should not be able to escape that curve unless it had the mass and momentum to do it. Having been hoist on my own petard there before - I figgered I better do some fact checking first - and I found this.

"...According to theory it has energy and momentum but no mass, and this is confirmed by experiment to within strict limits..."

Which, my friends, are scientific weasel words thrown out by turd brains that don't know what they're talking about but are too stuck up to admit it! What 'strict limits' are these guys imposing - and why? Is it scientifically valid to do so? My head aches when these physicists start to chatter - now they are inventing voodoo like dark matter, dark energy and fighting pitched battles in academic circles that are turning into blood feuds as they try to make their theories work.

Uncle Bob is in awe of scientists; I am not. Isaac Newton delayed the publishing of his greatest work, the Principia Mathematicae - waiting for Robert Hooke to die - because the old bastard had a penchant for plagiarizing Newton's work and selling it as his own. Today poseurs like Steven Hawking and Neil deGrasse Tyson impress the less intelligent with their credentials rather than their ability. They're performance artists, more than anything. So it was with Carl Sagan too.

The real scientists are oblivious to the limelight. They don't get their ego involved with their theories, they don't get attached to pet theories and they tend to be quiet and unassuming. A possible example of the best of the breed recently might be Peter Higgs. I wish I had paid more attention - apparently one of today's greatest physicists is some Iranian kid who was a point man at CERN's Large Hadron Super Collider that proved the existence of the Higgs Boson - and was a protégé of Higgs. These critters don't care, really, whether this or that theory carries the day. All they care about is that those theories stand up to rigorous experimentation and that all due diligence is done before accepting them. If some experiment proves that they're full of beans and have to go back to the drawing board they could care less! All that matters to them is the truth and that it is arrived at in a valid way. 80% of the population is incapable of thinking like this - objectivity is beyond the dull witted.

Perhaps, so it goes for me. When I hear "scientists" telling me that light is a particle (that behaves as a wave when it feels like it), that it has momentum but no mass even though it can produce measurable pressures against surfaces it is aimed at - all I can say is 'pull my other finger, guys'. When they tell me 'the math is complicated', I hear 'we made some assumptions that may or may not be valid...'. Am I trying to impose an invalid order on my world as I see it, or am I being objective? One thing I've learned about physics is that you can never have your cake and eat it too.

Today we have (hork, spit) scientists pushing warble gloaming based on evidence that is not repeatable or consistent, and often it's self contradictory. A recent study on 'studies' concluded that 65% of all studies produced results that were not repeatable. A study can say anything you want it to. Funny thing, that - atheists sneer at Christians saying that their Bible will say anything they want it to too! It used to be holy rolling tele-evangelists fleeced their marks with fire and brimstone and scripture - today they do it with visions of drowning polar bears, carbon footprints and green house gases.

I have this misgiving that once we figure out what light, time, and energy are - we'll probably blow ourselves up with it.

And maybe that's a good thing too! HAR HAR HAR!
