  1. Dirty little secret is, the unions allow "unlicensed workers" do their thang...its all part of the political game from the same political party.

    1. Just a protection racket, set up to provide work for the right people ie "registered" tradespeople who are also members of the relevant trade advocacy groups.

  3. House inspected prior to closing. Report says LICENSED plumber to remove attic insulation 1 inch away from double wall, gas water heater exhaust tube. Then, licensed HVAC technician to install 90-degree, 3/4-inch PVC elbow on secondary A/C condensate drain line, 9 feet in the air.

  4. When I had to replace a gas water heater, I was telling my tale of woe at work, and one of my buds snarked "You get a permit for that?" I just said "You hush your mouth" and we both laughed. The hardest part was getting the old, dead one out as the drain valve was rusted shut. Penetrating oil, patience, and a hose got that done.
The latest was getting a new gas range, and needing to convert it from natural gas to propane. I was supposed to get the pro's at the gas company to do it. I just said "Horse manure. I don't have half a century of mechanical experience for nothing." All the parts were there, and it took me about an hour.

  6. I live where NO inspections are required except for new septic systems, and the guy does that only if he feels like it.
We also don't have houses falling down or bursting into flames all the time.

  7. If it is so illegal for "an unlicensed person to perform regulated gas, plumbing or drainage work", then why does Bunnings and other hardware stores continually sell components to do this very work to anyone who enters their store and wishes to buy said components?
    The hypocrisy is deafening...

  8. During one company relocation, had to sell my house to a third party which then resold it to the public (so I could get my money and move immediately to new work location). House inspection came up with a few items, I fixed them myself the next day. Third party called and asked who I hired, stupidly I said myself. They said a licensed electrician/plumber/etc. would have to inspect and sign off the work before they could close out the account and transfer my money. I said go ahead and hire one then, cause I ain't. Took a little back and forth on the phone before I simply moved out and they eventually just accepted my work as good to go.

Too many times I've moved into a house that was supposedly built to code by licensed individuals, inspected by other licensed individuals, and still found numerous things wrong that I had to fix myself. Licensing is bullshit.
