Old Mort is slowly coming along. He’s big and happy and dumb but losing Macey really hurt him. She took a piece of all of us when she went. But as you all point out, they leave something beautiful behind when they go too.
We took him out to the seldom used nature trails down by the river out in the country and let him off his leash…and all his troubles left. We only walked about 400 yards in…but it took a good hour. Mort just smelled and smelled and sniffed. He ran hither and yon and we just let him go where he would. He was cheered right up. Apes like to groom each other and we are no exception. When we got home we sat with him on the floor with the combs and clippers. Our little family was together to heal, I guess. We’re doing alright.
The poor bugger is lit right up. The last couple of days he has been eating a lot of treats and human food and he got the Hershey squirts something awful. It’s so wet you can’t pick it up either. On one walk it looked like a troop of tobacco chewers had come down the trail, spitting and gobbing every which way as they went. There is a blood curdling mess under his tail in the “sanitary areas” that I gotta clean…and I know I am going to get nightmares and PTSD from it. Mort is a pig! GAH!
Life is slowly returning…and will go on shortly!ππ
Glad to hear that Mort is enjoying being the center of attention. As for the digestive issues, we've learned that hard way that our Rosie cannot tolerate anything poultry. And where our previous two Goldies lived and breathed for their canned food (Gravy!!! What a concept!), Miss Rose has the same reaction as Mort has. Last major disaster was us eating Burrito Barn takeout, and my wife set down the last couple ounces of her tortilla soup. Big mistake. It was three or four days before she could pass a solid stool. So her major diet is a good brand of beef/rice dry crunchies. I sneak her a few steak bites whenever I have one, but make sure she follows up with her "same ol' dry crap".
ReplyDeleteGod bless the old boy, it's good that he is coming around.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of dogs with a bad belly, my wonderful wife thought a marshmallow gun was a good idea for the kid. It shoots mini marshmallows 20 ft when you pump the handle. I thought I found all the damn things but evidently not. Poor little dog has been sick for 3 days. Needless to say the marshmallow gun is history.
ReplyDeleteHad GSD. Good dog- most the time. Came home from work. Dog left a giant steaming pile by back door. Scratched up door trying to get out. Ran across living room carpet with the squirts. Looked like he tried to write his name. Same thing by front door. Ran into bathroom and finished on bath mat. Mutt had eaten a branch off our artificial Christmas tree. Wire and all. Wonder it didn't kill him.
ReplyDeleteHoly shit, I laughed so hard I cried! The visualization was TOO much. I've experienced almost the same, so I can laugh...now.
DeleteI had a Dalmation that would eat almost anything except any green vegetable. Needless to say, some of the things gave her the squirts big time. Worst thing was when she swallowed a plastic grocery bag. She nearly had to have surgery for that, but was able to pass it
ReplyDeleteHer favorite thing to eat was PlayDoh. She would get into our grandsons stash and had the most colorful poop you have ever seen.
Our long furred, big, old mutt has always had a delicate stomach, and his behind gets foul. He's very much a house dog, so we have to clean him up. My wife has taken to cutting off the poopy fur with scissors. It seems to help a bit, and his bottom hasn't frozen.
ReplyDeleteThe young Pyrenees eats everything, and nothing gives him the runs. Maybe the $400 we paid for him was a good investment?
ReplyDeleteI suffered like a champ until I pinpointed that our GSD/Lab mix had a poultry allergy. Nearly all dog food has some sort of chicken in it. He'd unload gooey piles, and when it got bad enough, had the squirts. He's 95 pounds, so it's like me on a hangover monday.
ReplyDeleteI learnt that when homey starts whining, get up and let him out.
That said, switched his food, give him only non poultry treats, and it sorted him right out.
