Along our walk, we pass one of those man-made
Not that long ago there were kids here, and at any given time there’d be six or seven rinks cleared off the lake and hockey games would be going all the time. They’d just leave the nets out with the night floodlights all winter long and pack it all in toward the tail end of winter. Now…there’s only one rink left. I suppose the parents of those kids are empty nesters now. Time just flies. Back then Mort and Macey were good for a hundred miles a day. I was good for as much as I had time for. Now, the kids are gone. Mort and I are old men. We are good for nothing and Macey is gone.
Today we are looking at another pup. I’ll have to start putting miles on again, and Mort will be the alpha dog on our team. We are chinooking today with temps up above 0℃. You can almost pretend it’s spring coming on days like this. My life seems to move in cycles…and when one era ends, another starts.
The walks will no longer be the same. Mort is our old dawg now, and his walks are getting shorter. The new pup will get longer walks as she grows. I have one dawg left in me, I will be in my 70s when this last one passes if things go well. But nothing is assured. The mutt could have health problems. My Maker might get fed up with my booshit and drop an anvil on me. Life changes, lives come and go. I’m still feeling the vacuum left by Macey.
Whatever, it’s all good and ya gotta live life like it’s all still out in front of ya. Thank you all for taking the time to stop in and listen to me prattle. It’s gonna be a big day today for Mort and I, and We better get after it. Wish us luck.
Cheers
Filthie.
the macey vacuum will not go away but will not always be so piercing
ReplyDeleteDeb, I have cats that have been gone for 15 years and I still miss them from time to time...
DeleteYour right, we don't know how much time we have left. Make the most of it. You and Mort enjoy your walk. Maybe you'll see a rabbit.
ReplyDeleteI was out with her late last night for a squirt... and the coyotes started wailing... and Hannah started growling. She likes other dogs but the yodellers set her right off. It was hilarious...
DeleteAll the best to you and Mort, and your future Pal.
ReplyDeleteThanks Scott. Hey - thanks for dropping in!
DeleteYou're going to gain much happiness from the new pup.
ReplyDeleteEveryone needs a new pup!!! :)
DeleteDitto the other comments. Thankfully, we don't know what is ahead, so we can plow along happily until our Maker calls time. Enjoy the pup hunt, and good luck to you and Mort.
ReplyDeleteSTxAR if I win a million dollars I am going to come down there and check out your shop. Hope you're keeping busy...!
DeleteYou're doing the Right Thing. You're a good man, Charley Brown.
ReplyDeleteSometimes we get it right, TM. :)
DeleteWhen we were kids, pictures were not cheap, and you didn't know if you had what you wanted until you had the film developed (unless you had one of those Polaroid things, and they weren't cheap either). Nowadays, pictures cost literally nothing. So when it comes to dealing with a puppy, you MUST take pictures EVERY day for at least the first six months. They change so fast, a skipped day might miss something. While the grieving for Macey will never be over, the prospect of raising a puppy will keep you and Mort too occupied to dwell on it. Good luck to you both.
ReplyDeleteOh man... I had a Kodak from the early fifties where the lens was in a threaded barrel that ya screwed in and out to focus. I wish I still had it. Poor mom went broke developing pics of the dog taking a dump, the other tards, and the pretty girl that lived down the street. I wish I still had it... I'll bet that thing would be worth money today? Who knows... old cameras are a dime a dozen now... ya can't give the old high end 35mm's away anymore...
DeleteIndeed, Glen. Where I live, ticky-tacky housing developments have replaced a once-fertile farming valley. Most of the houses that existed when I came to the valley are now welfare "rentals." They say every man dies in a foreign country. Instead of its symbolic reference, I indeed live in a place that more resembles Mexico than America. Our "president" rolls out the red carpet for both the illegals and the Chinese. Indeed, all you and I are now is what we once were. It is what it is.
ReplyDeleteFriends leave us, and dogs get us used to that reality. We're down to three dogs now, if a Chihuahua even qualifies. We had to put down Dana the German Shepherd a few months back, and one of our two Aussies has one foot in the grave now. Aussies aren't smart to strat with, and go downhill with senility.
You and I will keep going until God tells us to stop. We're here because, for some unknown reason, God wants us to be here. Good luck with the pup hunt!
Oh jeez, Pete. I thought I had it bad putting Macey down. To have more waiting in line...? GAH! But it doesn't matter right? Y give them a good dog life, ya treat 'em right and love them... and they are the better for it as are we. It's all good... even if it doesn't seem that way...
DeleteBest of luck with new pooch, will give you and Mort a new spring in your step!
ReplyDeleteDamn right, J! I was out the door with the hound at four in the morning today... haven't been up with the birds in forever...
Deletetreasure the time you had with Macy for sure. but also have time for Mort. as he is missing her just as bad. getting new pup for Mort will
ReplyDeletegive him more reason to hang around longer.
wish I did that for our good boy Slim when his buddy Ziva pass on.
Yep - we spend a LOT of time letting Mortimer know we love him too. He's been really good so far, he even lets the baby eat out of his dish. When she pisses him off, he just gets up and stomps off. He's grumpy but gentle with her.
DeleteMy Maker might get fed up with my booshit..... sheesh, too funny. Yeah, He's probably got only so much booshit tolerance in Him. :) Making me laugh, dude.
ReplyDeleteGood stuff - keep smilin' and keep your bayonet sharp and your guns loaded! ;)
DeleteWe have all lost. It’s the circle. Find peace with the new family member.
ReplyDeleteWe will, A. We will... and may you find peace with yours too. Thanks for dropping by...
Delete"ya gotta live life like it’s all still out in front of ya"
ReplyDeleteExactly. Been my lifestyle from day one.
It's what keeps me going. Am 68 and got so much
to get done. Kentucky boy
Amen, A! Carry on keeping on... this is the way...
DeleteIf you have lived your whole life in debt, having a late mortgage isn't troubling. It's getting the house you want or think you need and renting it from the bank.
ReplyDeleteIf you time it right, as the economy shrinks and booms... you can do really well. I was just never really good at that...
