My grandfather was a Buick guy back in the 1950s so this photo is familiar to me. Yup a straight 8 Fireball with a Slush-O-Matic transmission made for an interesting ride.
My best high scruel bud lived across the RR tracks, east of the seed mill. We were goofing off one day, and I found a straight eight head in the weeds out by their barn. I think it was a Hudson.
Dad had an old 52 or 53 Oldsmobile, purple colored that we called it the Passion Pit had a straight eight in it with a 2 bbl carb, for such a heavy car it had some oomph to it.
My Dad bought a '51 Buick Super 2-door at an estate sale. 35K miles, factory two tone paint, no rust, straight 8, Dynaflow, 3-way hood, giant AM tube radio (antenna above the windshield), original mohair upholstery under the seat covers. That car cleaned up real nice.
An inline 8 puts out a lot more torque. All that massive crank is like a big fly wheel. I had a hard time accepting that inline sixes ruled the 1/8th mile drags, but they out torqued the V8s and got going quicker, off the line instantly, almost no tire spin.
My Grandpa had something with a straight eight. I say something because I was real young and don't remember what it was. What I do remember is climbing up on the bumper and looking over the radiator and that engine looked a mile long under that hood.
Well it does say "Dynaflash Eight" in small script under Fireball. The bare aluminium component on the upper left is the vacuum powered windshield wiper actuator. Al_in_Ottawa
Yup. Buick. My Grandad had one. Two 2 barrels. Ran like a skalded cat.
ReplyDeleteYou can't see the distributor but you can see the 8 leads going in Interesting, it looks like a single barrel carburetor.
