There's a lot of sombre men darkly swearing eternal vigilance on this anniversary of Sept. 11. Their message is primarily for the non-Rotarian fig farming goat feltchers that danced in the streets with glee when the towers came down. "Never forgive. Never forget." Say what you want, George Bush gave the savages the business end of that stick, and by all accounts they won't be forgetting any time soon either.
All those years ago, the weekend after 911 found us at my out laws for a family visit. I got treated to a lecture on global geopolitics by my father in law and brother in law: the USA had brought the attack on itself, that fascist chimp, George Bush was only going to make things worse, and it could all have been avoided if only Americans weren't such assholes and tried being nice to moslems. They were serious. And they were happy to see the US getting a comeuppance it so richly deserved. To them this was the stuff of entertaining political theatre. To me it was morals and ethics. I was going to open up and exercise my right to my free speech and my opinion... when I saw the pleading expression on my wife's face. My daughter was young and oblivious to current events... but like her mother, she loved these people too. I choked back the fury and managed to keep my silence. We were a family, and I had obligations to keep the peace. The world would do what it was going to do, regardless of what some idiot Canadians up in Alberta thought about it.
There's people memorializing this unhappy day much better than I can... about all I'd add, fellas... is that there are many more enemies, just as nasty as the perps of 911. They live right here beside us, as neighbours and even part of the family. They can be driven by stupidity, ignorance or even evil but it doesn't matter... those guys are what they are. It bears keeping a very sharp eye on them too.
