Dammit, M...

Over at The World's Littlest Airfield, some idiot
planted a scrubby little tree like this one all by
itself - at the end of the runway.
You'd think it was impossible to hit but I'll be damned if that
thing didn't eat at least 3 airplanes a year.
I dunno what gives either.
It's still there and I bet if somebody did everyone
a favour and cut it down, the RC
aviators would chit their pants in rage and howl for  his blood.
Aviators are unsavoury, unstable folk, and their RC cousins
are much, much worse...

  1. My brother bought an expensive RC helicopter. His first attempt in flying the thing ended in hundreds of dollars of repairs. His second attempt ended in projected hundreds of dollars of repairs. I think he sold it to a friend for about a hundred bucks. That was the smart thing to do, since his budget would never allow a successful flight.

    1. I can fly helicoptors on the simulator only very poorly, Jess. Setting them up and balancing them is a nightmare too. They are for experts only, and dedicated ones at that.

  2. "Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous. But to an even greater degree than the sea, it is terribly unforgiving of any carelessness, incapacity or neglect."
here is another one for you:

  3. Years ago at my old gliding club the farmer's field just beyond the end of the runway had a problem tree in a small copse. He had been asked a few times if something could be done about the tree but, nope. He did not like our tow planes or our student pilots landing in with his cows every year, so that tree was staying. Until it didn't. Funny. A tree just picking up and leaving one evening. Never heard of such a thing. Didn't even leave a forwarding address.

    1. Good on them! I may do the same at our club...

  4. Any landing you can walk away from or in this case, climb down from is good. I guess.

    1. It's never a good scene at our RC field WDS. If you crash, you are held up to public ridicule and the wreckage of your plane is photographed and permanently recorded in the annals of the club records. The fly boys that crashed in Viet Nam and got captured got a better deal than us guys do. Humiliation and degradation are high art forms with our guys.
