A Barbariess

I was watching an OyTube where they show you how to make chain mail. There’s two kinds of folk involved in it today: the “creative archaics” that dress up in medieval costume and attend big fairs ... and the dominatrix types that are into S&M and service customers like Quartermain.

Leaving the kink aside... I can see why people get addicted to this kind of thing. The craftsmanship alone could consume a lifetime of study.

  1. Some styles are extinct. Although there are samples in various museums, no one has been able to replicate the design.

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) does what they believe to be a good job at replicating the dress of the middle ages. In the Kingdom of Franswah the Fricasseed, an unknown knight with neither land nor Lord dropped in for the festivities, and after making hash of the Tried and True, challenged His Majesty Franswah to meet him on the field of honor. After a lengthy verbal exchange, some varlet dialed nine-eleven and told the local fuzz that things were going a bit too far.

As for myself, when I visited the museum in NYC some years back, I toured their medieval weapons floor. They have the only full set of antique horse barding in the U.S. I gather it's missing two small pieces. They also have a used breastplate that dates back a ways (can't remember, but it seems like 1100 AD), and by the size of the armor they judge the man to be around 11 feet tall. Goliath and all, you see.
