I have read accounts of folk that have raised bears for companions say that there are no better. Keep them fed, treat them with respect and they will become fiercely loyal and amicable companions. I think I am going to get one when my wife recovers her senses of sight and smell and kicks me out.

ReplyDeleteRiiight! Wild animals are always wild, forget it and you become it's lunch. Humans are not an apex predator without our boom-sticks.
ReplyDeleteThat is what I have read, Judy. You can't treat them like a dog or a cat - they are companions or even family members and you have to be mindful of their nature at all times... but supposedly, if you do that... you can't ask for a better 'pet'...
DeleteI gather that the (in)famous Judge Roy Bean kept a bear as a companion, and it worked out well for him.
ReplyDeletePeople have tried to domesticate the African Zebra, and generally failed. One Englishman brought back two Zebra foals, and raised them by hand. He was able to train them to pull a cart, but he said they couldn't be trusted and someone had to work with them every day without fail.
Coyotes are about the same, or worse. City dwellers think the coyote is a sort of dog - and it isn't, as well all know.
