Yesterday I went out to the shed, fired up Big Red … and listened to his warm rumble one last time this year. It was a bleak, grey day. Most of the leaves are gone off the trees, the skies are clouding over… and snow is in the offing. I didn’t do much riding this year. I opened the shed right up to let as much light in as possible, and I sat for awhile listening to the bike, thinking about the past year, and then started thinking about things I shouldn’t think about I suppose.
At length, I shut the bike down, pulled off the seats and pulled the battery. I’ll probably come out to the shed once more this year - to pull out the extension cords for the vehicles, and maybe the shovels and ice scrapers. Then the snow drifts will sweep in and surround the shed and seal it until spring. I spent the day doing mundane chores. This is how life and time passes us by… one chore at a time.
Mind you, next year, I will be champing at the bit. The ice will give way to spring… and I will have to charge up all the batteries and reinstall them for the summer. Maybe next year, some serious miles will be in the offing.
I use battery tender juniors to prolong the life of my batts. I also use a couple cheap 110v (what’s that in metric?heh) fans to keep the funk out.
ReplyDeleteDad used to put a heater or lamp underneath the Plymouth so it would start in the morning in Ohio winters.
My dad used to put an incandescent trouble light under the hood to keep it warm enough to start when it was going to be below zero (F). If I lived up in Glen's territory, a block heater would be a requirement.
ReplyDeleteI hope you're right about next spring, but I'm less optimistic than you are. We can hope and pray.
