My New Retirement Job

Do they even use fur anymore? The only fur I see on garments now are for trims. On a few mukluks and parkas.

When I was a kid some of my friends had trap lines…but that all seemed to go away in the 80’s.

  1. I started a taxidermy course when I was a kid. Never did much with it, but learn to tan leather. I get a trappers license each year just in case I need to take nuisance animals. But I don't seem to get much call for it now. I still have the hankering to make a skunk skin hat like the cat fur hat in the picture. I should put that on the front burner....

    1. And risk being verbally assaulted by the animal rights activists? You're a brave one STxAR, I'll give you that.

  2. Trapping is still big business up here…wolf, lynx, martin & beavers mostly. There are a couple raw fur shops in town and Los Anchorage still has a week long festival in February celebrating the fur trade.

  3. I don't hunt or trap (yet) but I am a bit of an artist. There is plenty of fur going around DeviantArt, Etsy, etc, but I'm ignorant of its quality.

  4. I had a winter coat once that was shearling sheep. They sew the coat and turn it inside out so the fur is inside. That coat saved my life when I ran out of gas at 3:00 AM and had to start walking. -25°F, which is (-31°C). Three miles on paved road, not much wind, and I was comfortably warm everyplace that coat touched me.

  6. Not worth the time or effort any longer to run a trap line for .50 to $1.00 a hide for raccoon skin.
