Wealth

I understand that once you’re properly
set up, all the home canner needs is lids.

I wonder if they couldn’t be re-used in a pinch? Or re-furbed?

  1. Simple answer is yes, mostly. Even store bought jar lids will reseal in a water bath or pressure canner most of the time. Manufacturers of lids don't want you to know that, and tell you it's dangerous. Reusable lids are also available at greater cost (of course).

  2. If you are inclined to do that (reuse), I only reuse once and I limit it to water-bath canning pickled items or jellies-n-jams. Botulism is not nice! Be very careful taking the lids off so you don't bend or warp them. The new lids are made with thinner metal and less sealing compound these days.

    1. Yes, they work, IF you follow instructions. I have many dozens of jars sealed with them in the pantry right now.

    2. Read 5 Acres & A Dream about the fail rate of Tattler lids and what she had to do to get a more manageable fail rate. (All canning lids fail from time to time.) The article was from about a month ago.

keep used carefully removed lids to put on top of the new thinner lids ring and process when cool remove ring and
extrar lid reuse the extra lid again as topper said it makes a good seal of the new thin lid under it try it as an experiment
