The only possible reason to go this way is that you can control the brass. There’s a lot to be said for guns that don’t throw their brass away. But other than that? Why not a 20 shot revolver? But I suppose old world esthetics and ways no longer have a place.
I have fired one of those Ruger ten shot revolvers - it has the typical Ruger trigger so it is not all that much fun to shoot. However, I also own a couple of S&W 617's which are ten shot revolvers also - they are immensely enjoyable - you are correct that you do not have to pick up all your brass as you would with a semi-auto, but it is just fun to shoot a double action revolver. I have heard it said that if you can quickly and accurately use a DA revolver, you can shoot anything well. That is probably an overstatement, but I do find it challenging to compete with the auto-loaders using my DA revolvers.
ReplyDeleteSteel challenge comes to mind
ReplyDeleteThose Rugers can be slicked up - I did it with all mine except the last one. And I may get egged for saying this... but I *think* I am seeing a decline in fit and finish on Colt and S&W these days. Ruger too, come to think of it...
ReplyDeleteSomethin’ to be said for the simplicity of a wheel gun…or any manually operated action. When it counts, when big, brown & furry is givin’ me the stink eye, I’ll take the slower rate of fire and the reliability of a revolver, levergun, or pump shotty over a semi any day. YMMV.
ReplyDeleteI have a Hi-Standard 22 revolver that looks unique with a silver frame and black barrel, hammer grips and trigger, and is fun to shoot and is accurate.
ReplyDeleteRevolvers will beat the crap out of a typical auto loader any day. People see too many movies and tv.
ReplyDeleteThere are some butt ugly guns out there Glen, but that one's a real contender. I have an eight shot Taurus in .22mag, and it looks a whole lot better than that beast. Still haven't quite figured out what it's for though.
ReplyDeleteFirst gun my family and I bought after turning 18 in the great police state of Ohio was a High Standard pistol 10 shot cylinder and 6 inch barrel . I always shot with cops back then [before they turned commie] and even the cops could not believe the bullseyes the wife and I got with that little gun . My Kate would shoot the inner black circle out of the NRA target every time . I wasn't far behind her . Loved that old gun ! When I finally sold it it was shot clear out . Probably 150K rounds .
ReplyDeleteNothing against Ruger, and I have several but that particular one don't do much for me. A High Standard Sentinel however, I'd love to find one of those.
ReplyDeleteI don't know , my first pistol was a High Standard Marshall 9 shot .22. I got it in 85 or so it is a sweet li'll gun, still have it all these years later
ReplyDeleteI suppose I am being a dink as usual. In the real world, if one of these gets you out and shooting (and they will, and they will get you shooting well)... smile and use it...
ReplyDeleteI believe the term you're looking for in "cynical".
