I don't think I have the reflexes to fly that one anymore. I prefer the big, clunky, slow flying boxes. I added six inches to the wings of my Sr. Falcon to make it even slower.
This looks to be a control line airplane that flies around in circles (yes, they still build and fly those). It would be easy to mod it for a rudder and ailerons… but then you have to design. How big do you want the surfaces to be, and how much do you want them to throw? I wish I had the design expertise for such a thing…
I hadn't looked at the plans close enough. You're exactly right. The bellcrank and two control wires out the left wing are dead giveaways. What appear to be ailerons are more likely adjustable flaps. I flew control line as a kid for years before I could afford a radio, and it can be pretty intense. You fly anywhere in a hemispherical bowl, including straight overhead, and your flight only ends when the engine runs out of fuel. I never did or saw combat control line, but I know it was quite a sport too with two flying in the same space with streamer ribbons from the tail to be cut by flying up your opponents rear.
The specs were a give-away too I suppose. Plans call for a .25 `.35 engines... which to me means that they are control line engines with no real throttle management or carburators. So... you'd have to take a swing at upping the engine displacement too for the added weight of the battery, servos, connection hardware, fuel tank... I *think* a .46 would do... but I am just pulling that out of my arse and guessing... maybe one of the gurus could make a better estimate...
Pretty sexy, I say go for it.

Is this your bird or a fantasy project?

ReplyDeleteThat would be like giving a brand new corvette to a teenage driver who just got their license.
