That's GREAT! Especially the paw print! My dad sailed gasoline tankers in WWII. He'd have loved this, as he probably sailed with a few Hermans himself in his lifetime.
Your Dad was a year older than my grandmother, Elmo. If I remember correctly she passed in '02. There are some days I feel like I could pick up the phone and call her and talk to her like no time has passed at all.
Oh yeah; There have been many mascots in the CG, both ashore and afloat. Shipboard pets even had specially cultivated patches of grass that served as the "necessary room!"

ReplyDeleteWe go out in weather that makes squids quiver at the quayside!
DeleteAs on old Coastie Coxswain told me, "You have to go out. You don't have to come back."

Deployed to Osan AFB South Korea 1973
There was a black cat named “Oscar” that lived in the hangar.
Oscar had a personnel file that included an Article 15 for shitting on the commander’s desk.
We captured that cat one night and put him in the cargo hold of a TR-1 (U2) and sent him to 80k feet
He was never difficult again
