Not To My Taste

Hmmmmmmm. The 686 is a big gun and generate noticeable recoil with full power loads, and aesthetics would also favour more substantial grips. Also, I’m not much of a fan of folders, preferring the safer lock backs. Not a fan of snubbie revolvers either. If I had to go that way I’d prolly pack one of those Sig P365’s or one of the little Glocks.

There’s nothing wrong with any of this kit, different strokes for different folks.

  1. Agree with shooting comfort for the .357 full power loads. Even in heavy platform of the L frame, heavy bullets develop wallop on both sides of muzzle.

The knife pictured is a liner lock, a brass tab which moves over to block it from closing. As long as it engages, it is pretty safe. Appears to be one of the Schrade products, but can't be sure.

Like you, snub nosed aren't my favorite either. Many experts do point out that they are very difficult to be pulled away if a physical encounter is done - nothing to grip. I will concede tradition though and a cylinder of appropriate ammunition should handle any close range threats. For a small hide-out revolver, a Charter Arms 3" .44 Spcl. Bulldog to me makes it easier to agree with.

I can't shoot a snub nosed design as pictured past 15 yards, but that is my fault. Olde Eyes and sights so close together don't mix well.

  2. I believe that knife is a frame lock. Nice looking grips on both wheel guns but I am more interested in function than looks. I carried a S&W 642 in my bike jacket pocket for years, it is so light weight it just disappeared in there. I always thought that I could fire it from inside the pocket in a worst case senario then I read the story about someone doing same and how the hot gasses ended going up his sleeve.

  3. I get paid over 85 dollars per hour working from home with 2 kids at home. I never thought I'd be able to do it but my best friend earns over 10,000 dollars a month doing this and she convinced me to try. The potential with this is endless.

  4. I didn’t used to be a fan of revolvers ,fun to shoot, but didn’t fit my perceived notion of being practical for carrying concealed with any amount of comfort. I like to carry all the time and I really don’t want to feel like I am, I know Mr Filthie you mentioned in comments on one of the awesome pictures you post, that you would probably carry,if you were allowed, the awesome 1911.i tried for a while and that dang thing was just too noticeable, only the weight, the gun hides nice. If I carry my little pistols(Glock 43 or Springfield 3.3 ,45 acp which are the same size) for some reason iwb on the side hits the nerves and makes my back hurt! So to make a sense of this post , I carry a lcrx 9mm

appendix iwb and most of the time I never notice, even with a little bit of belly over it! So seeing these revolvers now days gets me giddy!

    1. Minor correction - if I feel the actual need to carry… I will, and Justin Trudeau can go fuck himself if he doesn’t like it! 😂👍

I would probably open carry too. The vast majority of criminals are opportunists. Just the sight of a gun will turn them off and they’ll go seeking easier prey.

I’d carry in a heavy gun belt and holster too. Given my druthers I’d probably do that with a full flap holster too. I could get away with that because of my lifestyle. I am very solitary, avoid crowds and gatherings of vibrant or stupid people.

  5. Filthie - I don't think that is a 686 - looks like a six shooter, plus I can see the edge of a moon clip - when the 686 is cut for moon clips, they are not visible above the edge of the cylinder. I think that is a 625 in 45 ACP because of the moon clip and the profile of the front sight blade. That is my thinking anyway.

    1. Holy crap - good catch! In my day the only S&W with that under lug were the 686’s in 357. Mind you, a stiff 45 Colt will still rock your world… but in 45 ACP…? That rig would be a sweetheart…

  6. The revolver in my night stand is an S&W Md. 686 in .357 loaded with hollow point bullets and fitted with Hogue grips, which is the only way I'm able to manage the recoil from this beast. My thought is that should I miss, the noise will cause the bad guys to flee - which is an acceptable resolution to oh-dark-thirty invaders.

I agree with pjk; that's not a 686 or 586 in the photo. It's an S&W, but it's one of the odd models.

The snub nose is fine for self-defense. I'm able to hit stuff with mine, and if I can do it at my age and high mileage, anyone else will have an easy time of it.

    My two cents...
