When We Were Kings

  1. Wow, my 1970s & 80s of browsing and buying in the several Kapp & Petersons in Dublin. One on Grafton Street, one across from Trinity College and one on the North side of the Liffey on O'Connell Street. Thanks for stirring my happy memories, Filthe. :)

    1. Stoke that stinker, B! The rest a ya's - smoke 'em if ya got 'em. Hospitality is the order of the day, and the anti's and weak sisters can just put up with a little second hand smoke for a change!

  2. Lot of nostalgia in this picture.
And I would like to spend a few hours walking around a place like that.
I'll give some credit to the internet for the ability to acquire a nice collection of estate pipes and the ability to purchase a couple very well made meerschaum pipes directly from the maker.

    1. Back 35 years ago I was a part-time manager at a smoke shop in Minneapolis - which had a pretty vibrant group of pipe makers and smokers. I stumbled into numerous deals for estate pipes just by being behind that counter. Still have all of them today and have promised my wife that I will begin using them again if I ever retire.

  3. The pipe is the only thing that tempts me to smoke. The whole ritual of buying another pipe for your collection, the different tobaccos, then relaxing, loading it and smoking - it's just all good.

Unfortunately for me, I have asthma, so smoking is out. Even second hand smoke outside feels like a handful of razor blades whirling around inside my lungs, and the effects last for several days.

  4. Looks like Wally Franks on Madison Ave in NYC where I 1st got hooked on pipes in the 60's, mostly cheap- $3 - $5 Algerian briars that darken really well, and scored some great higher end estate pipes in a shop in SFO on Bush street (across from Sam's Grill) in the 80s. Still have about 40 and they may get a lot of use if / when the SHTF - not too many stogies around then. I have 3 bags of bargain pipe tobacco in the freezer. Both may be a great barter item... Agree with BB & Deathray - thanks for the memory jog.
