Saturday Ramble

Fall is definitely in the air now. It gets cold at night and we are within striking distance of frost at night. I’m still running round in shorts and sandals. I may be in trouble when the snow flies though. I have always worn boots my whole adult life. It changed the shap of my feet - my toes used to taper inward.

For the first time in my life I decided to live in shorts and sandals for as much of the warm months as possible… and now my toes splay out a bit…kinda like an ape. My big toe has turned into a thumb and now I could prolly grasp objects and even eat with my feet! HAR HAR HAR!!! But… it’s going to be hell going back to my boots in winter! I got blisters from an afternoon in Redwings.

☹️

The Turd Bird is taking shape. I got everything together for a preliminary hang test for the centre of gravity and we are just a smidge nose heavy… which is what I’m told that you want.

All the guts are in loosely to check the balance

I am at the point where I need to start committing to permanently putting stuff in. I can make some final alterations but I am probably going to start covering in the coming week. That is going to be a chit show because that’s when all the mistakes show up. But… that’s fine. This is how ya learn. And if it flies and dies… the next one I build will be a bit better.. it has the makings of a handsome bird as far as I’m concerned.

We’ll see what happens. Hope your weekend’s off to a great start.

  1. Not that I am a plane expert but it kinda looks like one of those bush planes to me. The ones with the flaps that have the gap along the wing and the bigger tires. I thought those kind had smaller tails though but again what do I know lol.

    1. In its original configuration it is supposed to resemble a WW1 fighter plane. I did away with the scalloped ailerons and elevator and dumped the dihedral for a flat wing and so on… but you are right. I like the bigger tires and robust landing gear, and it is a high wing plane so…it is a confusing plane to look at for sure…

    2. That tail shape has WW1 all over it. It kind of confused me without the rest of the things you removed. Thanks for the clarification.

  2. What's wrong with your drill press? Looks like it's mom took Thalidomide. Hope Phil don't see it!

    1. It’s the belt hatch got bent. It fell off one day and hit the floor. I should really fix it one day…

  4. Most folks don't realize that the elevator on a conventional plane is pulling DOWN. It's to counter the wings rotational moment forward, which is the result of generating lift. If the CG is too far back, the elevators leverage becomes zero or negative and will be violently unstable. Proper CG will be about 30% of the chord of the wing.
I found the easiest way to adjust CG was to enable the battery pack for the radio to move forward or back. On one very nose heavy monstrosity that I built, I actually had to put a small lead fishing weight in the tail.
If you have never read Stick and Rudder by Wolfgang Langewiesche, you're in for a treat. It is THE best explanation of what makes 'em work, and has never been out of print since 1944.

    1. I have a really heavy rear landing gear ass’y and was going to use that to adjust for my CG… but after reviewing my options…yep… I may actually have move the batt and possibly the servos back instead…

  6. The retro build looks like a joy to fly. The airfoils/controls would appear large enough to have a degree of forgiveness during maneuvers...and landings! Enjoy.
