My mother got hers when she married my dad - 1952 - I have it and still refer to it on occasion. I grew up seeing that in the kitchen everywhere that we lived with growing up.
I found a reproduction at Cracker Barrel and bought it long years ago. I've used it all the time since. It is a great reference. And those meals taste good, too.
We are in our seventies and have a shelf of cook books from as far back as 1882 and a box of hand written recipes from the early 1900 but when the lady of the house wants to make something that requires a recipe out comes the iPad and then she complains because there is no way to save the things she changed with the saved recipe!
Yeah...my mom had one. That was back in the mid 60's.
ReplyDeleteHey, one of my mas had one like that too!

I'd love to have a decent copy for myself.
ReplyDeletePlenty of solid old style MAKE DO cooking information in there.
Guilty as charged: I have one.

Every recipe called for 1 lb of butter or lard !!
Got one, still use it. Covers everything you'll ever need.

ReplyDeleteWe have one from the late 60's, so it still recommends lard, bacon grease, all the right stuff.
ReplyDeleteWe do have a more modern (not BH&G) cookbook that's got "healthy" alternatives, but I've never opened that one.
