In its original form, it could burn just about anything. Lamp oil was best because of the smell. Kerosene fills the room with kerosene fumes. You could actually burn gasoline in the thing, but it's dangerous as hell. You can also burn alcohol in it, but that's a waste of good hooch.
Electrical conversions were popular because you didn't end up throwing away a good lamp.
It looks like this one has been converted to electricity based on the cord running out of the right hand side. We used to see a lot of those back in the day - wonder what happened to all of those conversions.
